Badminton coaching – It’s as easy as ABC…
Alveston Badminton Club (ABC) have a very popular junior section aimed at young players who want coaching – and those who just want to play this fast indoor sport. Make new friends whilst getting healthy exercise! Although the club was only started in May 2009, by the beginning of 2014 we had over 100 current members (of whom around 20 also represent Warwickshire in county junior squads) making us the biggest club in the county – and we hope, the best!
Coaches qualified by Badminton England
Run with SIX experienced and (Badminton England Level 2) qualified coaches plus assistant coaches, you’ll enjoy a mix of technical and tactical coaching, games, competitive tournaments and matches against other junior clubs. Three of our coaches work with Warwickshire squads on a weekly basis and can bring the latest coaching ideas to our own club nights. There are occasional “celebrity” coaching sessions from international players too. Racquets are available to borrow if you don’t have your own – including a range of shorter length ones for beginners whilst they gain confidence and co-ordination
Club endorsed by Badminton England
Alveston Juniors was the first badminton club in Warwickshire to be awarded “Premier Club” status by Badminton England. This means we have to maintain high standards with regard to CRB / DBS checks, insurance, Child Protection, First Aid etc. We also have our own Child Welfare Officer. Our weekly sessions are run in Stratford upon Avon and Leamington and club membership is open to pupils of all local schools aged 8 – 18. We also have our own innovative fun based section for 5 – 11 year olds – Wacky Racquets “Badminfun” introducing the sport to primary school pupils. Whilst our players are mainly Warwickshire based, we’ve had members travelling to club nights from Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands!
Club nights run all year round
Unlike some clubs, we run twelve months a year – we don’t let school holidays stop us!
Each week, throughout the year, we run 6.00 – 7.30pm and 7.30 – 9.00pm Tuesdays at Stratford Girls Grammar School in Shottery – but check before you come as there will be occasional weeks when we don’t have the use of the hall. Wacky Racquets “Badminfun” runs alongside the 6.00 – 7.30pm session so there is a seamless transition when players are ready to move up to “proper” badminton.
On Thursdays we also have two weekly sessions at North Leamington School, 6.00 – 7.30pm and 7.30 – 9.00pm. A Wacky Racquets “Badminfun” session runs every week at the same time as the first session and players are encouraged to move up when they are ready
Joining Alveston Juniors does not commit you to a particular session every week. We appreciate that some nights our players have other commitments, including homework, so we encourage them to drop in to another of our venues and play against new opponents. A number of our members regularly attend two sessions every week in addition to their county commitments
Unlike many clubs, we have a strong female participation of around 40-45% enabling us to offer opportunities for singles, level doubles and mixed doubles play
Duke of Edinburgh award opportunities
The club has two opportunities for those taking their Duke of Edinburgh award – as a player on the physical exercise module and as a helper for the community side.
And the cost? – Regular attendance costs just £5 a session and unlike many clubs, you only pay when you play – no paying for sessions up front that you aren’t able to attend. For players who only attend ocassionally, it’s £6 on the night. These prices also includes racquet hire – we have various sizes for those who are younger or less experienced. This cost can include a free club polo shirt too! At Alveston Juniors we’re very much a family club and the majority of our members attend with a sibling. We therefore offer a special deal to larger families – three siblings can attend for the price of two! We also run a few “family sessions” during the year to let our young players show their parents what they’ve learnt
Enthusiasm and a positive attitude are all you need – and all we ask for! So what are you waiting for? Contact the club to arrange a free trial session!
The club is very grateful to financial help received from Stratford Town Trust. It was their generosity and a shared desire to give the children of Stratford this sporting opportunity that set the club up initially in 2009. Since then the club has grown in popularity. In these recessionary times however, our costs have increased so we are indebted to the Trust for a grant of £2,000 in January 2013 to help us keep membership fees at an affordable level.
